in new york city, i'm tony dokoupil. ♪ it's tuesday, december 27th. 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." political dustup. president obama says he could have won a third term. to that, president-elect says no way. mall chaos, fights and fireworks, and people running for safety had forced the evacuation of several malls around the country. oh, that ain't good. >> thousands of travelers are still trying to make it home after a winter storm shut down after a winter storm shut down roads and cancelled flights.

captioning funded by cbs good good morning, from the cbs 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. this morning, there's a new bone of contention between president obama and president-elect donald trump. mr. obama said had he run again against mr. trump, he would have won. not so, says the president-elect suggesting mr. obama's record would have prevented him from winning. roxana saberi is here. in new york with more. roxana, good morning. good morning, meg. president-elect trump said he could have won again. mr. trump took to twitter to disagree. this follows a series of rare public confrontations between the outgoing and incoming administrations. >> reporter: in a hypothetical presidential race, president-elect donald trump says there's no way he would lose to president obama, citing

jobs, isis and obamacare as the reasons on twitter. the comment came in response to a podcast interview the president gave to a former senior adviser suggesting the contrary. >> i'm confident that if i had run again and articulated it, i think i could have mobilized the majority of the american people to rally behind it. >> reporter: mr. trump has been at odds with the sitting president in recent weeks for weighing in on foreign policy issues before officially taking office. >> abstention. >> reporter: yesterday, he blasted the united nations as, quote, a club for people to have a good time, days after the u.s. voted to condemn the israel settlement. trump has also signaled a break with decades of longstanding u.s. policy on nuclear weapons, tweeting last week that the u.s. needs to strengthen and expand its nuclear capability. 20 days before his inauguration, mr. trump seriously defended his

charitable foundation in a series of tweets, saying he maintained the foundation never used donations for salaries or other expenses and that 100% was given to charity. mr. trump's foundation has been under investigation in the state of new york citing that the foundation may have been used for his personal benefit. over the weekend, the president-elect announced he'll be shutting down his organization. the new york attorney general's office says he can't do that until the investigation is complete. meg. >> roxana saberi here in new york. thank you. coming up on "cbs this morning," we'll talk about the u.s. resolution demanding an end of israeli settlements with ian bremmer. president of eurasia group and global political risk company. post holiday shoppers at a number of malls had to take cover after a string of fights broke out last night. fights and disturbances from reported malls from long island, new york, to texas. at some, there were false reports of gunfire. a fight among about ten teens broke out at a mall in manchester, connecticut.

there were several arrests, but the scene was the same at a mall outside of cleveland that seemed to have been organized on social media. seven people were injured during a fight at a mall on long island. today, a significant storm will impact the pacific northwest, including heavy snow and strong winds. but folks in the northern plains to the great lakes are trying to recover from a holiday storm that disrupted travel. wendy gillette reports. >> reporter: dangerous weather conditions shut down the airport in minot, north dakota at least le early tuesday. piles of snow, blinding winds also closed expressways there both north and south dakota for several hours. some were covered in ice. motorists were warned to stay off the roads. shovellers in bismarck uncovered difficulty, while snowblowers got a hardy workout. >> i think i've done more this year than since i've owned a snowblower.

and i've hand-shoveled about ten tons of snow. >> reporter: in minneapolis, gusty winds some as high as 66 miles an hour affected takeoff at landing. >> super bumpy, we got a little motion sickness. >> reporter: chicago's midway airport led the nation in flight delays. forecasters say the storm will also bring freezing rain and snow to new england. it's a different story in lansing, michigan, where it's downright warm. the state capital broke a 125-year-old temperature record monday. wendy gillette, for cbs news, new york. overseas, one of the flight recorders from the russian jet that crashed into the black sea was recovered this morning. it was found about a mile from shore. the site located a beacon of a modern version. it may help identify the cause of the crash. all 92 people on board are believed dead after the jet crashed shortly after taking off sunday from the russian city of sochi. this morning, russia grounded all bu-154 jets until the reason

for the crash is determined. in hawaii later today, japanese prime minister shindo abe will become the first japanese prime minister to visit the u.s.s. memorial in pearl harbor. he will join president obama at the historic arizona memorial. abe will not apologize for the attack. the visit comes six months after mr. obama became the first sitting american president to visit hiroshima, site of the first u.s. atomic bombing. five inmates who broke out of a jail in eastern tennessee have been captured. a sixth remains on the run. david frasier had been in custody for aggravated robbery and possession of a weapon. he is considered dangerous. the six broke out of jail early christmas morning by removing a toilet from a wall and going through the hole behind it. apparently leaking water had

rusted the bolt keeping the toilet in place. this year may go down as one of the worst years for drunk driving deaths. an average 28 people a day have been killed in dui accidents. kris van cleave talked to a woman who understands all too well the pain a drunk driver can cause. >> it must be a moment you think about all the time. >> constantly. >> reporter: christine alexander knows the pain a drunk drier can cause because she was one. when you got in the car that night, did you know how intoxicated you were? >> no. >> reporter: did you think you shouldn't be driving? >> i didn't think i was that intoxicated. i thought i was fine to drive. >> reporter: that night in 2004, she had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit. driving home from the bar she crashed into her boyfriend richard hale's motorcycle. he died. she went to jail.

in 2016, 10,265 people died in alcohol-impaired crashes. an increase of nearly 300 from the year before. 2016 could be even deadlier. >> if you're drinking, don't drive. >> reporter: national highway traffic administrator. >> we have seen increases we have not seen in 15 years, it's tragic. >> reporter: why do you think? >> that's what we're still trying to figure out. >> reporter: nhtsa is hoping its technology will reduce the number of drunk driving deaths. it uses sensors to determine a driver's blood alcohol level. if it's too high, the car won't start. for christine alexander, it's too late. >> every waking moment you relive it, you can't take it back. >> reporter: virginia is planning to start testing the drunk driving prevention technology next year. the system can be offered as an optional feature in new cars by 2020. kris van cleave, cbs news, washington. coming up on the "morning news" colombia crash investigation.

of a brazilian soccer team. colombian officials say the plane had no fuel and the engine shut down. the pilot failed to notify air traffic control before it was too late. the plane was flying nearly 1,000 pounds overweight and higher than the recommended altitude. the "los angeles times" reports on the death of pioneering astrophysicist vera rub rubin. she's best known for uncovering evidence of dark matter in the 1970s. she's credited for groundwork for the theory. rubin was 83 years old. "the philadelphia inquirer" reports a racially charged tweet by a drexel university professor. in a christmas eve post professor george ciccariello maher wrote all i want for chris is a white genocide. maher who is white said it was not meant literally.

bbc news said cheetahs are heading towards extinction. new reports estimate there are 7100 left in the wild. the world's fastest animals are in trouble partly because they increasingly come into contact with humans. hunters are also killing their prey. and the miami herald says thousands showed up for a mexican girl's 15th birthday party. rubi ibarra's father posted a facebook video earlier this month saying everyone was invited to the bash in la jolla, mexico. take a look at that. the post went viral and many people took it literally. people from across mexico made the trip. happy birthday. still to come -- social media breach. sony is targeted again by hackers. this time spreading false information about a pop star.

here's another look at this morning's top stories. president-elect donald trump says there's no way he would lose to president obama if they ran against each other. president obama had said in an interview, if he had run for a third term, he would have won. mr. trump also blasted the administration and u.n. after the security council passed a resolution condemning the israeli settlement. in the past the u.s. vetoed that measure. there was a string of fights in malls. in a mall outside of cleveland police disbursed a large crowd with pepper spray. police say it was mobilized on social media. there were also disturbances at malls in new york, memphis, texas and colorado. there were a number of arrests but no serious injuries.
